So long as the additional copies of Server are the same version or older, your SBS CALs cover access to the additional servers. They can be DCs or member servers, no one cares.
While techically possible to run RDS/TS on this box,Īfter that, you can have as many copies of Windows Server as you want/need/budget for. SBS Premium = Server 2008 copy 2, that can be installed on a separate box from SBS, and SQL Server, that can be installed on either, or even another copy of Windows Server (just one though). SBS, as you have discovered, does not allow the RDS/TS role to be installed for users to logon remotely and run applications.
SBS 2008 = DC, root of the forest, and if you use any of the software that came with it, you must install them on the SBS itself. If you are running a SBS and a 2008std then apply the TS cals to the 2008 std and let your users access this server :) You cannot run 2 SBS servers on the same network. rdp file to the RWW page using the SBS console.Īnd I thought that this can be done in 4 steps. Create a new MIME (for Windows Mail in this example) type in IIS for RDP.Īdd a link to the. rdp file to the path where Remote Web Workplace resides on your SBS server.ģ.
To add to the confusion, when I enquired about the license for the TS for SBS2008 std I was told that this is available only for Windows Server 2008.įrom reading the instruction for adding a RemoteApp to Remote Web Workplace, my understanding is:ġ. When I try to run remoteprograms.msc this is not available on the current server. I need this process to proceed to the TS RemoteApps Manager. As a result I am not able to get to the licensing part On the present SBS2008 std when adding Roles under Server Manager I find that Terminal Services is already installed but greyed out (not selectable). Just to enhance my understanding on this matter. How do I run TWO SBS2008 std on the same domain? How do I work around this problem I I am to use two SBS 2008 std?
The spare server that I have is a 32 Bit platform and SBS2008 std currenlty in use is 64Bit.Therefore I cannot use SBS2008 std on the available server. I have SBS2008 std and you suggest another SBS2008 std, ie two servers. Regards, Boon Tee - PowerBiz Solutions, Australia - This is where I get confused. You will have to contact the vendor for that information. There is no way I could comment further on setting up your app on the RWW link as I don't know what it is, or what it does, or how it works. Install that on your 3rd server and use it as a Remote Desktop Server. Purchase Server 2008 R2 Standard and RDS CALs. You will get 1 x SBS2011 Std server, 1 x Server 2008 R2 with SQL 2008 R2.Ģ. Get SBS 2011 with Premium Add-on like you are planning. Looks like we are going around in circles here.ġ.
I thank you again for your invaluable advice. What will be the steps involved to achieve this? ie to have the application link on the RWW home page for the selected remote users. I have to make the correct choice in selecting the SBS2011 software to have SQL, remote access and SBS2008 std on theĪssuming I choose your second option from your initial post. I will be purchasing SBS 2011 to replace the Windows server 2008 R2 installation.
The Windows Server 2008 R2 is temporary software used. I thought that the TS Cal's would have beenĪn easier solution to my initial problem - requiring simultaneous remote access to run a single application, updating a SQL database. Thanks for the tip on down grading the CAL's for the SBS2003 as an alternative. I have 3 servers : 1x SBS2008 std, 1x Windows 2008R2 + SQL and a third a 32 bit platform ( which used SBS2003 std ) not used now.
